Biography

Sanyama is a psychedelic trance project of Ra or Rahul.
If you are a label or distributor interested in exploring creative melodic psy-trance, please get in touch. A number of tracks are ready for release.

Ra lives in San Francisco, California and is a software architect/engineer by profession.

Currently, work is underway on a psy-trance album called Paramnesia, which consists of a wide spectrum of trance sounds ranging from psy-progressive to melodic Goa to hard-driving, twisted stuff. Look for the release by summer 2007.

Mission:Accomplished release on SF Psy-Fi 604, a compilation CD of San Francisco artists.
You can check out samples and buy the CD at Saiko Sounds The CD release party was on Feb. 28, 2003.
After-Party released on San Trancecisco, a compilation of local artists in the various trance genres
Available at the San Trancecisco website and Tower Records.
Tribunal on SF Love Parade 2005 compilation, includes artists from SF (Ekko, etc.) and Israel (Double REL, Blanka), etc. Special release, not directly available at the moment

Party News:
We have a psytrance monthly party called Alchemy held every 2nd Saturday of the month. The party will start with diverse music like electro-house, breaks, progressive rock, etc. and end with psytrance. One of the goals is to mingle with different music communities and we also provide a small area for artists and designers to display their work.

We also have a bi-monthly party called Program at a beautiful venue called Supperclub, in San Francisco. The party aims to promote downtempo and psy-progressive trance and additionally, performance and art. Details at: http://www.bioharmonics.org/program

Previous parties:
We used to have a monthly downtempo party called :::Submerge::: at Cafe Azul, a chic lounge in San Francisco.
The party aimed to promote local talent to wider audience and create a nice social scene for unwinding.

Sanyama's alter-ego in the downtempo world is called MetaThema, and an album called Perfusion is in the works.

Burning Man
For those of you who do not know, Burning Man is a gathering held every year in the Nevada Desert. It is an art show, a party, a community interaction and truly is a life-changing experience.
We have a nice psy-trance sound camp called Outpost23 and we hosted psy-trance parties out there.
The best part for me was playing a sunrise set in the middle of the desert with some people going wild to the music.

What does Sanyama mean?
Sanyama is a Sanskrit word that cannot be quickly explained here, but in short it is the process of absorptive meditation and one of the stages in Yoga, as the path to salvation.

Sanyama is described in the ancient Indian texts on Yoga (more specifically Book #3 of the Patanjali Sutras). Click here for a more detailed explanation.
(A search on the web will give you a lot to read and think about :)

There is a lot of common ground between spirituality and psy-trance... self-exploration, expanding one's awareness and consciousness, empathy and collective consciousness are some common aspects.
Food for thought: One's state of consciousness can be altered by meditation or trance; meditation is when the self controls the mind (conscious), whereas trance is induced by external factors.
